Yoga for Healthy Lower Backs is evidence-based, recommended mind-body approach to improving back health and function. The programme, gently and progressively, aims to help you happily get back to being more active.
Low back pain is a common problem and group yoga can provide a cost-effective solution. We are excited to offer an evidence-based way to improve your back health and function – the specialised 12-week ‘Yoga for Healthy Lower Backs’ programme gently and progressively gets people back to being more active and teaches you to relieve stress and tension.
Yoga Postures
You will learn to incorporate gentle basic yoga and de-stressing techniques within daily life. Thereby, you improve postural awareness, breathing, mindfulness, pain-relief and relaxation skills and benefit from health improvements for now and the future. The poses include relaxing, stretching and strengthening in lying, standing and sitting positions. (e.g. yoga block, blanket or belt) are used to aid effectiveness and ensure absolute comfort.
What you will gain
This 12-class yoga programme works for the long-term and is enjoyable. Participants are encouraged to bring postural improvements and mindfulness into their daily lives and are motivated to practise at home. In the trial, improvements were still found a year after starting yoga, and 60% of the trial’s yoga group were continuing to practise for 30 minutes twice a week at home nine months after ending their yoga course. Home practice is likely to benefit their longer-term general physical and mental health.
Research that Used this Specific Yoga
The University of York’s York Trials Unit in The Department of Health Sciences, ran the most significant and largest research trials. The ‘Yoga for Healthy Lower Backs’ programme was proven to be 30% better than usual care.
Comparative to other rigorously-tested treatment options, results for the yoga programme were better than manipulation by physiotherapists / chiropractors/ osteopaths, exercise taught by physiotherapists, manipulation plus exercise, cognitive behavioural therapy, an educative book, massage, and six individual Alexander Technique Lessons. This research was funded by the charity, Arthritis Research UK, who support the ‘rolling out’ of the programme.

The course Resources Pack is an important part of the course and consists of a book packed with helpful informative notes and pictures of the postures, plus 4 Relaxation practices to download or on CD, home Yoga sheets, schedule for practice and assessment notes.

Yoga Backs and Posture
Whether you just want to strengthen your back, have a problem with your back and need some rehabilitation or you would like some *Prehabilitation in preparation for surgery then “Yoga for Healthy Lower Backs” is for you.
*Prehabilitation or “Prehab” is participation in a therapy based movement such as Yoga which helps to avoid injury and prepare you for surgery. This is a proactive approach and can address deficits in strength, stability, range of motion, balance and overall joint function. This practice improves the odds of a successful surgical outcome by using Yoga.
Using yoga poses we focus on developing strength and flexibility, with movement to release physical tension. This practice is designed to bring structural balance back into the body by gently stretching key muscle groups, focusing on body alignment thereby reducing discomfort and help you heal.
